S.M.A.R.T. Goals

 Initial Goal- Write the goal that you have in mind

 Specific- What do you want to accomplish? Who needs to be included? When do you want to do this? Why is this a goal?

Measurable- How can you measure progress and know if you’ve successfully met your goal?

 Achievable- Do you have the skills required to achieve the goal? If not, can you obtain them? What is the motivation for this goal? Is the amount of effort required on par with what the goal will achieve?

 Relevant- Why am I setting this goal now? Is it aligned with overall objectives?

 Time-bound- What’s the deadline and is it realistic?

 Result is Your Smart Goal- Review what you have written, and craft a new goal statement based on what the answers to the questions above have revealed

An example of my current S.M.A.R.T Goal;

Initial Goal- I don’t want to eat as much sugar.

 Specific- Goal is to eat less sugar. Only I need to be included, although it does help if my hubby is on board too;) I want to do this at least until the end of November. This is a goal because I know my body is happier when I have less sugar. I was also told by my naturopath that I have a yeast issue (overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria) and I need to quit sugar for a while. I would totally agree that this is true;)

 Measurable- I can track this by marking off days on a calendar I have not eaten sugar.

 Achievable- This is where is gets tricky. I think that say absolutely No sugar for one month is not achievable for me right now. A more achievable goal is to eat no sugar 75% of the time during November. To make this goal achievable, I am not counting times when I have a little honey, maple syrup or when I eat apples (my Naturopath has me eating 4 apples a day for fibre). Sweeteners in clean foods such as Gratify treats, Nutty Fat Bombs or protein bars are also not things that I will count as sugar. These allowances make this goal more achievable and realistic for me.

 Relevant- This goal is relevant because I want to improve my overall health.

 Time-Bound- The timeline is November. I hope to continue into December with reduced sugar intake, but I will only set one month at time to make this goal less daunting.

 Smart Goal- I will eat no sugar 75% of the time for the month of November. I will track my daily progress to make sure that I am not having too many days with sugar. The result will be improved overall wellness and a reduction of pathogenic bacteria in my digestive system.
