Holiday Recovery
Internal Balance’s top 5 Tips for Holiday Recovery
Hydrate
When we eat too much or are very busy we can forget to hydrate our body. If you find that you are always thirsty and water does not satisfy you then try adding some minerals to your water (ask me for my favorite types of minerals).
Support The Liver
Our livers are responsible for processing not only the alcohol, which you may have consumed over the holidays but all the toxins from our food and environment. Be kind to your liver by drinking warm lemon water and eating greens. See below for a green juice/smoothie recipe.
Sleep
Sleep is the most undervalued tool in our tool belt. You are not a superhero (well, you are a superhero but a superhero that needs sleep because you are also human!). Try for an early bedtime at least twice a week. Eliminate screen time at least 1 hour before bed (T.V, computers, phones, ipads, eBooks…) as the artificial light interferes with hormones for a restful sleep.
Be Kind To Yourself And Realistic About Your Expectations
Negative self-talk about our choices of food or other indulgences does no good after the fact. Choose to indulge and do so with love and enjoyment until you choose a ‘healthier’ alternative. When setting New Years resolutions (if you choose to do this) remember to be realistic and follow S.M.A.R.T. goal setting (The acronym S.M.A.R.T. means Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-sensitive).
Move
Getting outside is not only good for our bodies but also for our minds. If you are in a Canadian winter, find some sunshine (in Penticton, a local mountain such as Apex usually has some). This movement can be a walk, run, hard sweaty workout or yoga; just move. Movement also allows toxins to be processed out of the body.
Seriously Green, Seriously Good Juice
1 Cucumber (peeled if not local or organic)
2 Leaves of Romaine Lettuce
3 Leaves of Kale
1 or 2 Stalks of Broccoli (optional- can pre-steam if blending not juicing)
1 Lemon, yellow removed from skin (feel free to retain the white, which is high in calcium)
1 Green Apple (lower in sugar than red apples)
Juice or Blend with a high quality blender and enjoy! -
